Job Posting: Organizer

The Green Workers Alliance (GWA) is a project of PowerSwitch Action. We are organizing utility-scale solar installers and wind turbine technicians nationally using an online-to-offline model as we campaign to dramatically raise job standards in the field and increase investment in the green sector. With more than 1,300 members, we are organizing workers for more and better green jobs, building an organization with multiracial member leadership, and elevating workers' voices in some of the most critical climate fights. Our work will help win economic justice, combat climate change, and achieve a just transition from fossil fuels.

We are seeking an Organizer to strengthen our online organizing and help us develop our ground organizing. We currently have a small but mighty staff of three. In addition, at least six GWA members participate in three-month paid fellowships each year.

With a workforce that is constantly on the road, much of our work currently occurs online, with an annual leadership meeting and opportunities at least every other month for members to participate in in-person activities like meetings, actions with allied groups, and press conferences. We seek to increase this in-person work, particularly with regular organizing tours to workplaces and hiring fairs.

A typical day might consist of online outreach to members we find on Facebook, calls to members and leaders, helping deal with a member’s workplace issue, and doing a training with GWA fellows. On the road, it could involve visiting workers near their workplace, participating in rallies or actions with members, or bringing together leaders to plan strategy.

GWA’s lead organizer will be the immediate supervisor for this position. In addition to one-on-one meetings, our staff meets online twice weekly and in person at least twice a year.

Responsibilities

The Organizer will help drive our efforts to grow our membership base, develop leadership, and ensure that member voices are leading our decision-making and campaign work. The Organizer will engage in online and in-person outreach on organizing tours in different parts of the country.

  • Solicit membership through a combination of online and in-person visits.

  • Mobilize, turn out, and engage membership.

  • Develop organizing skills of members.

  • Identify, recruit, train, and develop leaders.

  • Develop various communication systems to reach members and workers in the field effectively.

Experience and Requirements

  • At least two years of experience in field or online organizing; this can include organizing work as a member while working in the renewable sector or related construction field.

  • Campaign planning experience in organizing gained through either a member or staff role.

  • Ability to think creatively, strategize, and implement effectively.

  • Effectively prioritize various assignments and responsibilities.

  • Willingness to work occasional long and irregular hours, such as nights and weekends, as needed.

  • Ability to travel up to 3-4 days a month, on average.
